STM and the tunneling current

The Scannning Tunneling Microscope is directed by the tunneling current, thus it can show the three-dimensional image of a certain body. The size of the tunneling current varies according to the proximity of the surface and the probe. Thus, the nearer the probe to the surface, the higher the tunneling current will be, while the farther the probe from the surface, the lower the tunneling current will be.

This is just some of the special wonders that microscopes could perform. Special microscopes, like the Scanning Tunneling Microscopes, perform tasks unusual to other microscopes.
